Title: Targeted Tutoring
Author: John T. Roskosky
Summary:
Mr. Roskosky is a retired high school principal, education-writer, and consultant. He shares his experiences with tutoring on the high school level.
1. Teachers need to find a way to reach every student, and that requires targeting strategies to students’ individual needs.
2. Creative methods can be used for Individualized tutoring.
3. Tutoring must be specific and targeted.
4. On the high school level, tutoring was held one hour before and after school, four days a week. There was also a lunch time tutoring class available.
5. Teachers identified individual students needing help with specific learning objectives.
6. The tutors were the school’s best, most student-centered teachers in each content area.
Analysis:
Targeting tutoring is not “education as usual.” When we have individual student’s goals in mind, our tutoring will look different. It will meet individual needs rather than a group goal. One idea I liked is to have a tutoring center where teachers/tutors are available before and after school as well as during the lunch break for students to come and ask specific questions and get assistance with any school work or homework. This article supports the work we are doing within our grade level, school, and district to support our PLC goals.
